Know How To Dispose Of A Scrap Car Without Paperwork

Nobody wants to deal with stacks of paperwork, especially if you’re the type to lose your belongings easily. But what do you do when it’s finally time to sell your scrap car? Here are all the basics you need to know:

What Paperwork Do You Need To Dispose Of A Scrap Car?

If you’re planning to sell the car as used to private buyers or a dealer, you’ll need to provide the following:

  • Registration Certificate

The most important document to have as a car owner is your registration certificate, serving as proof that you are the sole owner of the vehicle. It’s best that you produced a few copies of the document in case you lose one.

In addition, you’ll need to prepare your driver’s licence, or any other proof of identification.

  • Transfer Of Ownership Form

The New South Wales government requires that you transfer a registered vehicle within 14 days from the date of purchase; otherwise, you’ll be burdened with late transfer fees.

You can easily apply for the transfer online, providing your vehicle number plate and pensioner details if applicable. But, of course, you can still complete the form offline by downloading the Application for Transfer of Registration document via the Service NSW website.

  • Roadworthy Certificate

Is your car roadworthy? As a driver, it’s your responsibility to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive and that means undergoing the vehicle safety check when necessary.

Obtaining a roadworthy certificate through your local Authorised Inspection Station (AIS) not only deems your vehicle safe to drive but also allows you to apply for registration.

  • Owner’s Manual And Servicing Logbook

If you haven’t rummaged through your glove compartment in a while, that’s good! Chances are your owner’s manual is still stowed away in its deepest recesses. These documents may not seem essential; however, some buyers may require you to provide them when selling a car.

  • Receipts

As with any transaction involving money, it’s best to issue an official receipt. This is especially important when the buyer is paying more than $75 for the vehicle, proving that they have handed you the accurate sum of cash.

Make sure to be as detailed as possible when filling out the receipt, including details such as your car’s make, model, colour, registration, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

If you have the necessary paperwork, selling vehicles will be a breeze. However, there may be instances when you can’t provide one or more documents — would you still be able to find a willing buyer?
